The Londoner: The World’s First Super Boutique Hotel

Published: 20 Feb 2024

Set on the southwest corner of the legendary Leicester Square is The Londoner, an urban resort in the heart of London’s West End. Individual, intimate and eclectic, The Londoner is home to 350 exquisite bedrooms and suites, six concept eateries and bars, a private residence for guests, an urban wellness retreat, and a collection of inspiring event spaces including a stunning ballroom for up to 850 guests.

What sets The Londoner apart from other neighbouring hotels is something they call ‘super boutique’. The story behind this epithet is simple. While the hotel’s size and facilities imitate that of an urban resort – think 16 storeys teeming with exclusive experiences – the design, curated art collection and exquisite furnishings bear the hallmarks of an intimate boutique hotel. Every space has been curated by international design studio Yabu Pushelberg, combining beauty and innovation in the most exquisite way. All spaces, from bedrooms to lobby, are adorned with arresting modern art and sculptures, inspiring guests and visitors at every turn. In fact, not only guests, but judges, too. The Londoner won the coveted first prize in the Luxury Hotel category at the 19th Annual Hospitality Design Awards 2023.

Although The Londoner has only been open since September 2021, the five-star property is already renowned in the industry and has garnered several awards since they opened their doors. On a MICE level, The Londoner was awarded ‘Most Innovative and Tech-Friendly Venue’ at Event Technology Awards 2023, ‘Best Hotel’ at the C&IT Awards 2022, as well as ‘Best Event Space’ at the AHEAD Global and AHEAD Europe Awards 2022. These recognitions have cemented The Londoner’s reputation as the perfect place to host anything from lavish weddings and conferences to fashion shows and gala evenings. Its magnificent, pillarless ballroom is one of the capital’s biggest, featuring state-of-the-art audio-visual technology and exquisite banqueting. Seven meeting rooms and two screening rooms operated by Odeon Luxe also makes The Londoner a world-class presentation space.

It is not a surprise that The Londoner has played host to some of the most illustrious events on the world stage. Enjoying close ties with the arts, The Londoner’s ballroom has hosted grand events such as Vogue’s Forces For Change, London Fashion Week, BAFTA Gala, British Fashion Awards, Bugatti x Carbon Champagne, 50 World’s Best Bars, BFI Luminous, Vogue x Tiffany, as well as fashion shows with Daniel w. Fletcher, Huishan Zhang and Richard Quinn.

The Londoner’s accolades are not limited to the events sphere, either. It was awarded Gold Winner in the Overall Luxury Hotel category at Travel Weekly’s Magellan Awards 2022, followed by ‘Hotel of the Year’ at the AHEAD Europe Awards 2022. At the AHEAD Global Awards, it was voted the winner of the prestigious Ultimate Accolade.

So, what is it that makes The Londoner such a special place to stay? The loft-inspired and open plan rooms provide a luxurious escape, complete with five-star amenities. Guests have access to a subterranean spa and three residents-only rooms at The Residence, where guests can eat, drink, work, relax and enjoy complimentary breakfast pastries, antipasti, soft drinks, tea and coffee throughout the day. Six unique restaurant and bar concepts offer a variety of exquisite culinary experiences in beautifully designed surroundings. Live music, craft workshops and exclusive events take place on a weekly basis – every floor teeming with things to explore.

Wellbeing is vital in a busy city like London. Guests and business travellers expect world-class facilities to stay healthy when travelling. A luxury hotel’s approach to wellness needs to be holistic, which is why The Londoner developed The Retreat, an entire floor dedicated to wellness. In 2023, it was awarded ‘Best Urban Spa’ at Organic Spa Media’s Wellness Travel Awards, a testament to the value it brings to its guests. At The Retreat, guests have access to a pool surrounded by secluded cabanas, steam room, sauna, a 24-hour professional gym, hair salon, nail bar, gentlemen’s barber, as well as a superfood bar, serving nutritious food and drink. An extensive and specially designed treatment menu is available, using only premium products that align with the hotel’s sustainability ethos.

In fact, sustainability is a huge part of The Londoner’s DNA. In 2019, the group secured an industry-first £175m Green Loan from HSBC UK to fund the building and implementation of sustainable technologies. This helped The Londoner achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating from BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), using 30% less carbon than regulations demand. It also helped The Londoner secure two ‘Newbuild’ accolades, first at the AHEAD Europe Awards in 2022, then at the AHEAD Global Award later that year. The Londoner is committed to operating at sustainably as possible, and has set a target to become Net Zero by the year 2050.
