Since welcoming its first guests in 2018, Edgbaston Park Hotel has been on a mission to lead the way in sustainable hospitality, reducing its environmental impact and embracing greener ways of working in the heart of Birmingham. With 188 stylish bedrooms and versatile event spaces for up to 240 delegates, the hotel is a popular choice for everything from overnight stays and conferences to weddings and celebrations.
Owned by University of Birmingham, Edgbaston Park Hotel reinvests all its profits directly into the University, helping to fund world-class research. So when guests choose Edgbaston Park Hotel, they’re not only experiencing exceptional service and first-class facilities, they’re also helping to support academic research that makes a real difference across the globe.
Award-Winning Sustainability
The hotel’s commitment to sustainability has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, Edgbaston Park Hotel received the prestigious Gold ECOsmart Award from Greengage – a global accreditation recognising organisations making meaningful progress in environmental responsibility. This was followed by the Gold Green Meetings Award from Green Tourism, placing the hotel among a select group of UK venues recognised for sustainable event practices. Most recently, the hotel was named Winner of the Excellence in Sustainability Award at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Awards 2025 – a proud reflection of its ongoing work in waste reduction, green initiatives and its alignment with the University’s own commitment to sustainability.

Sustainable Practices in Action
As a zero-waste-to-landfill venue, Edgbaston Park Hotel has implemented a wide range of eco-conscious initiatives across its operations. These include a 50% reduction in glass waste by switching to canned drinks, implementing a new waste management system for guests, and the use of refillable, eco-friendly toiletries in all bedrooms. The hotel has also removed plastic condiment sachets and single-serve jars from its buffet, and has motion sensor lighting across its buildings to reduce energy consumption.
In a further demonstration of its commitment to biodiversity, the hotel is the proud owner of two beehives located in Bath, helping to support the UK’s natural ecosystems. The honey harvested from these hives now features in the hotel’s signature Bee’s Knees dessert, served in the 1900 Restaurant. Across its menus, CO2e-rated dishes allow guests to make more environmentally responsible dining choices, while the 1900 Bar stocks vegan wines, alcohol-free beverages, and B Corp certified soft drinks.

Green Meetings Package
In response to growing demand for sustainable events, Edgbaston Park Hotel introduced its Green Meetings Package. This bespoke offering is designed to provide delegates with an environmentally responsible way to host meetings, conferences, and events without compromising on quality or service.
The package includes everything needed for a seamless event, with added sustainable touches throughout. Delegates can enjoy unlimited responsibility sourced tea and coffee, as well as a low-carbon lunch and snacks. Complimentary on-site parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, including six electric car charging points. High-speed Wi-Fi and cutting-edge AV equipment, such as an LCD projector and screen or TV screen (depending on the room), are also provided to ensure a smooth and productive event.
Conference rooms feature refillable glass water bottles, but they’ve eliminated branded notepads, pens, and flip charts to reduce waste. However, stationery can be provided on request. Delegates are also encouraged to travel responsibly, with University Station located just an eight-minute walk away.

Giving Back to the Community
Edgbaston Park Hotel is committed to giving back to the local community through a range of meaningful initiatives. The hotel’s volunteering committee has organised a variety of fundraising events, including food donation drives, bake sales, a Family Fun Day and Christmas shoebox collections. Collectively, these efforts have raised over £1,800 for the hotel’s chosen charity, St Basils who support young people experiencing homelessness across the West Midlands. In addition, during University of Birmingham’s Summer and Winter Graduation Weeks, the hotel launched a special initiative, making a donation to St Basils for every new graduate who booked to stay or dine.
Team members are also encouraged to give back and are given up to two paid volunteering days per year to support causes of their choice. In 2024 alone, the team dedicated 294 hours of their time to volunteering, underscoring their commitment to social responsibility.
Edgbaston Park Hotel's mission to be one of the UK's greenest event destinations is evident in its sustainability initiatives, industry recognitions, and community engagement. By continuously striving for environmental excellence and social responsibility, the hotel not only enhances the guest experience but also contributes to a more sustainable future.
