Athens is the capital of Greece and is know as the birthplace of western civilisation. It was established as a city 3,500 years ago and flourished in the Classical period, producing thinkers such as Socrates, Plato & Aristotle. There are many ancient monuments such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon, built on top of a hill in the 5th century BC. Athens was host to the 2004 Olympic Games and a new international airport was built and is about 21 miles from the centre of the city (40 minutes by road or train).
