Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain, after Madrid, and is located on the Mediterranean coast. The city is one of the world's leading tourist centres, a growing financial area and has one of Europe's principal Mediterranean ports. Barcelona has recently been joined to a high-speed rail that links major cities in Span with France.
Barcelona was originally a Roman town which developed in to a trading city in medieval times and now its old centre has one of the greatest concentrations of Gothic architecture in Europe. The city is renowned for the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner and was the location for the 1992 Summer Olympics. Las Ramblas is probably Spain's most famous street, lined with trees and used by both tourist and locals.
Barcelona’s international airport is the second largest airport in Spain and currently undergoing expansion to increase its capacity. The airport is 11 miles from the city centre and it takes around 30 minutes by road.
