Florence is in Tuscany and is famous for glorious artwork, cultural heritage and playing a major role in the Renaissance and Humanist movements. Florence is a small city, but extremely beautiful and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The history of Florence stretches back as far as the 8th Century BC when a primitive settlement lived in the valley, it was recorded as an official Roman colony in 59 BC. There are many famous sites in Florence such as the Duomo, Santa Croce, the Pitti Palace, the Ponte Veccio and the Uffizi Gallery. Florence's Amerigo Vespucci Airport is six miles northwest of downtown, but handles a limited number of airlines.
