Germany, is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. After World War II, Germany was divided into two separate states before becoming reunified in 1990. Germany is a founding member of the European Union and is also a member of the United Nations, NATO, the G8. Germany has 16 international and 14 regional airports all interlinked with the country’s extensive fast rail, regional railway, motorway and interstate road networks.
