Madeira has a sub-tropical climate with mild temperatures between 18c in the winter and 24c in the summer. The island was discovered by the Portugese in 1419 and received a Natural World Heritage classification from UNESCO in 1999 as it has untouched prehistoric forest and two thirds of the island is protected. The island is 35 miles long and 13 miles wide with a population of 280,000 half of which live in the capital Funchal. The airport is just outside Funchal and the transfer time to the major hotels and conference venues is around 15 minutes.
