Mumbai was originally a cluster of seven islands, is today regarded as the "Gateway" to the India. It derives it's name from Mumbadevi, the patron goddess of the Koli fisher folk, its oldest inhabitants. Set on natural harbour and winding creek Mumbai is on the narrow coast of Western India. Once a Portuguese princess' dowry and later an adornment of neogothic architecture, the city, which began as a trading post is now the country's financial powerhouse and industrial heartland. Mumbai has a good selection of the hotels and conference venues. A quick flight can take one to the famed beaches and lush greenery of Goa or to Aurangabad, to visit the ancient rock-cut shrines of Ajanta and Ellora. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is 15 miles from the centre of Mumbai.
