Naples has many places to visit of cultural interest and the city has a bay with lovely views of Capri and the Ischia islands. With Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Vesuvius nearby it is also possible to visit the ruins of ancient Roman resorts like Pompeii and Herculaneum. The city's commercial and cultural history has always been connected with its port ever since it was established as a Greek colony around 600 BC). Conquered by the Romans in 327 BC, it became a favourite residence of emperors and literary personages, including Virgil and Nero.
Compared to other European cities, Naples is a large, chaotic city - but this is part of the city's charm. It has had a reputation for petty crime, and derelict areas, but the city has improved these in recent years.
The airport is situated 4 miles north east of Naples, taxis and a shuttle bus run to the centre of the city.
