Rhodes is the biggest island of the archipelago Dodecanese and is the capital of the group of Greek Islands. Rhodes city lies outside and within the walls of a very well preserved Venetian castle, built by the Knights of Saint John, which is one of the finest examples of medieval architecture and played an important role in Roman history and the Crusades. As well as the old town, the neighbouring new town has nightlife, restaurants and bars, plus its own beaches. In classical times, the island of Rhodes was dominated by three city states – Ialyssos, Kamiros and Lindos – which united to found the city of Rodos in 408BC. There are still relics of that era to be seen, although nothing remains of the Colossus of Rhodes, the huge statue of the sun god Helios/Apollo (the island’s patron deity) that was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The airport is 10 miles from Rhodes city and is served by 16 scheduled airlines from European cities. Other destinations can be reached via Athens.
