Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and centre for the country’s economy.  The city is situated on a gulf of the Mediterranean.  At the centre of more modern development where steel and glass structures blend with baroque and palm trees, lies the old medina which is a walled city of narrow alleys with fountains, palaces, and mosques.  Outside this area lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said.  Tunis-Carthage International Airport is 5 miles from the centre of the city.
