Vienna is the capital of Austria and is a city rich in history. From the 12th century to the end of World War I, it was the seat of the Hapsburg Empire. The city is known as a centre for the arts, Johann Strauss and its coffeehouses. Vienna has impressive old buildings, for example the Hofburg Palace (home of the Hapsburgs), St Stephen’s cathedral, the Opera House, the Parliament building, the Spanish Riding School. The city isn’t crowded and feels spacious with parks and open spaces, monuments and fountains. The old city is surrounded by the ring, which is a wide boulevard for cars, trams, buses and has a separate cycle path and pavement for pedestrians. It takes 10 minutes to walk from any point on the ring to the St Stephen’s Cathedral which is in the centre and is surrounded by pedestrian shopping streets. It is an easy city to get around on foot. As well as the shops and businesses, 80,000 people live inside the ring, so there are people walking around and using the Viennese cafes. Most of the main hotels are situated on the ring eg Hilton, Marriott, Radisson, InterContinental, Le Meridien, Hotel Imperial, Grand Hotel Wien and the Bristol. Vienna is a clean and safe city with a low crime rate. Vienna International Airport has flights from more than 80 international airlines and there is a direct train every ½ hour which takes 16 minutes to the Ring. A bus transfer takes 20-30 minutes. In the city there is an underground system (1 euro for a ticket), trams and buses.
