Washington, DC was founded in 1790 to serve as the nation’s capital and as a commercial centre. It is situated on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.  George Washington was the first president and namesake of the city.  The full development of Washington as a monumental city did not come until a hundred years later when the McMillan Commission updated its plan to establish the National Mall and monuments.  It home to the White House and Capitol hill as well as the Smithsonian  National Museum of Natural History, National Air & Space Museum, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean Memorial and FDR Memorial.  The city has lots of open, green space, is easy to walk around and the centre does not have high-rise buildings.  There are 3 airports in the Washington DC area airports: Ronald Reagan National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International.
